Dandy is a loving and sweet 6-year-old Chihuahua mix weighing about 13 pounds. He is a true shadow and lap dog who does not like being alone and enjoys spending time sitting beside you on the couch. Dandy has a low energy level and prefers short walks; he also likes chewing on bones and is very motivated by food, which is one of his favorite things. He is housebroken, crate trained, and best suited to a home with a yard where he can feel secure. Dandy is shy at first but warms up quickly to gentle attention. He thrives in a home where someone is around often, as he does not do well alone and can howl when left by himself, so apartments are not ideal. He gets along with dogs about his size, especially those who are calm and low energy, but he tends to chase cats and bark at them, so a cat-free home is best. Dandy’s prior owner was elderly and could no longer care for him properly. He has some allergy concerns and is currently on a duck protein-only diet as part of a food elimination trial to determine if his allergies are food or environmental based. He may require medication for allergies for his lifetime and has a history of ear infections and luxating patella, for which he receives joint supplements. The ideal home for Dandy offers patience, routine, and lots of cozy lap time with a compassionate family who understands his special needs and gentle personality.
